Asperger Syndrome is a neuro-developmental condition and is present from early on in life, although features may be subtle and not cause for concern at that stage. Individuals present for assessment at various stages of life and owing to a range of circumstances. It may be that their behaviours are causing distress or concern to others, while they seem oblivious or unaffected. On the other hand individuals suspecting that their difficulties are owing to an autistic spectrum condition, commence their own research via the Internet or available literature. Some choose not to pursue a formal assessment, whilst many decide that assessment and diagnosis will be beneficial as a process per se, as well as the subsequent sources of support or guidance available.
Part of the diagnostic process involves education and explanation. The individual and the family feel able to make sense of what has, at times, seemed like very difficult or odd behaviours.
